Federated Social Media: Hardening Mastodon Nodes Against Web Scrapers
The Context: "The 3 AM Trigger"
Our self-hosted social hub began stuttering under massive request volume. Checking Nginx access logs, we found hundreds of rogue bots scraping user histories to construct advertising profiles.
The Problem Statement
Block aggressive scraping of federated statuses while maintaining valid ActivityPub federation with known partner instances.
Visual Architecture: The Flow
The Core Logic / Process
Hardening the ActivityPub Outbox
We configure custom request filtering rules to prevent automated scrapers:
- Require HTTP Signatures: Restrict access to json profiles unless requesting server signs the request with a valid key.
- Strict rate limiting: Enforce limit at Nginx level based on request header signatures.
- Robots policy: Deploy aggressive user-agent blacklisting.
The "Baigan" Take (Expert Insights)
They say federation is open, but that doesn't mean you let crawlers harvest your conversations. Baigan ka crawling hai ye (pathetic crawling). Lock your profile endpoints and reject unsigned GET requests.
