Private Location Tracking: Running OwnTracks Recorder without Cloud APIs

The Context: "The 3 AM Trigger"

Commercial navigation apps keep detailed history files of your locations. We built our own private tracker backend to secure our coordinates.

The Problem Statement

Record and store device coordinate logs privately without exposing real-time GPS feeds to external clouds.

Visual Architecture: The Flow

The Core Logic / Process

Location Recorder Pipeline

  1. HTTP Private Server: The mobile app transmits coordinates via secure HTTPS POST endpoints.
  2. No External Maps: Render maps locally using OpenStreetMap tiles to prevent Google API tracking.
  3. Isolated storage: Raw GPS points are written directly to local databases.

The "Baigan" Take (Expert Insights)

Your locations are your personal data. Giving them to ad networks is baigan-level security. Host OwnTracks, store your tracks locally, and own your history.
