Secure Document Archiving: Paperless-ngx with Local OCR & Encryption
The Context: "The 3 AM Trigger"
A cloud-based document scanner changed its terms of service to allow 'machine analysis' of uploaded documents. That meant bank statements, contracts, and IDs were now training material. We pulled everything local.
The Problem Statement
Injest, classify, and index physical paperwork locally using low-resource optical character recognition (OCR) and cryptographically secure storage.
Visual Architecture: The Flow
The Core Logic / Process
Document Ingestion and Isolation
We build Paperless-ngx on local nodes:
- Local Redis Task Worker: Manages asynchronous document classification.
- OCR Sandbox: Running Tesseract OCR locally without hitting cloud APIs.
- Encrypted Storage: Storing PDFs on an encrypted filesystem (LUKS).
The "Baigan" Take (Expert Insights)
Your tax forms and legal agreements are your own business. Uploading them to a cloud scanner is a baigan-level security risk. Keep it offline, run local OCR, and encrypt the storage volume.
