DNS Shielding: Caching Nameserver Resolution via Local Unbound & Pi-hole
The Context: "The 3 AM Trigger"
Your ISP log-records every single DNS request you make, building a profile of your activity. Even third-party 'privacy' DNS providers sell query logs. We configured our own recursive resolver to cut them out.
The Problem Statement
Run a local recursive DNS resolver with query minimization (QNAME) and tracking domain blocks.
Visual Architecture: The Flow
The Core Logic / Process
DNS Isolation Pipeline
- Pi-hole Blocklist: Blocks trackers and ad servers at the network boundary.
- Unbound Recursive Resolution: Resolves names directly from root servers, avoiding upstream DNS logging.
- QNAME Minimization: Sends minimal query components to protect resolution path metadata.
The "Baigan" Take (Expert Insights)
Why are you giving your browsing history to third-party public resolvers? Baigan ka privacy setup hai wo (a useless privacy setup). Run Unbound, query the root servers, and keep your history private.
